On Saturday night, September 20, 2025, a devastating accident occurred on State Route 74 at Columbia Street in Hemet, California. A 71-year-old woman, Debra D. of Hemet, tragically lost her life while lawfully crossing the road in a marked crosswalk. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports the incident happened around 11:15 p.m., when Debra was struck by an eastbound Honda that ran a red light in the No. 1 lane.

The suspect behind the wheel, identified as 21-year-old William C., was reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. After the accident, the driver fled the scene, but authorities located him a short time later at the Soboba Casino. CHP seized the vehicle as evidence and arrested William C. on suspicion of DUI.

Despite emergency efforts, Debra suffered fatal blunt-force injuries and was later pronounced dead at Hemet Global Medical Center. The details of this tragedy are still under investigation by officials.
