A serious two-vehicle collision on Tuesday evening led to major injuries and temporarily shut down a section of southbound State Route 242, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:23 p.m. just north of the Gregory Lane off-ramp. Initial reports indicate that two vehicles were involved in the collision, both of which veered off the roadway and came to rest in a nearby ditch. One of the vehicles reportedly struck a tree with significant force, contributing to the severity of the injuries sustained.
Emergency personnel from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, along with paramedics, were quickly dispatched to the scene. At least one person was transported from the crash site with what authorities described as “major injuries.” The full extent of the injuries and the number of individuals involved have not yet been disclosed.
As a result of the crash, authorities shut down all southbound lanes of SR-242 at Clayton Road for an undetermined amount of time while first responders worked to treat the injured and clear the scene. The closure caused delays for evening commuters and required detours to alternate routes.
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the accident. It remains unclear whether speed, impairment, or weather conditions played a role in the collision.
Officials urge drivers to exercise caution while traveling on State Route 242 and other busy roadways, especially during evening hours when visibility may be reduced.
