Two Juveniles Suffer Major Injuries in Suspected DUI Hit-and-Run on Highway 111 in La Quinta

Overview of the Collision
Two juveniles were hospitalized with major injuries after being struck by a vehicle while riding their bicycles across Highway 111 near Adams Street in La Quinta on Friday evening, October 10, 2025. According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded at approximately 9:05 p.m. The driver allegedly fled the scene but was later located and detained by authorities.

Officials identified the driver as a 47-year-old Palm Springs resident, referred to by law enforcement as Jose O. Investigators believe the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash and may also have been involved in a separate hit-and-run incident earlier in Indian Wells. The driver—who authorities say had previously been placed on probation for DUI—was arrested and booked into the John Benoit Detention Center on $7,500 bail. A court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday at the Larson Justice Center in Indio. The investigation remains active.

While the cause and liability determinations will ultimately rest on the findings of the official investigation, early reports indicate the profound dangers impaired and hit-and-run driving pose to vulnerable road users like children and teens on bicycles.

Why Bicycle DUI Crashes Are Often Severe
Collisions involving cyclists are disproportionately likely to result in serious or catastrophic injuries because:

- Cyclists lack the structural protection of a vehicle’s frame, airbags, or restraints.
- Impact forces often occur at vehicle bumper or hood height, increasing the risk of head, neck, and thoracic trauma.
- Evening and nighttime conditions can reduce visibility for drivers and riders alike.
- Impairment diminishes reaction time, depth perception, and hazard recognition, increasing the risk of high-energy impacts.
