DUI Crash Leads to Fatality on Lakeville Highway
DUI Suspected in Fatal Head-On Collision on Lakeville Highway in Sonoma County
Overview of the Crash
Authorities are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision on Lakeville Highway in Sonoma County that occurred early Sunday morning, October 26, 2025. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash happened at approximately 5:56 a.m. just south of Old Lakeville Road No. 3.
Preliminary findings indicate a southbound Ford Mustang crossed the double-yellow lines while attempting to pass a Toyota Highlander. During that maneuver, the Mustang collided head-on with a northbound Honda HR-V. The impact caused the Toyota to spin off the roadway. CHP reported that none of the six occupants in the Toyota were injured.
Tragically, a passenger in the Honda HR-V died at the scene. Both the driver of the Honda and the driver of the Mustang suffered major injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. CHP stated that the Mustang driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Lakeville Highway was closed for more than four hours while investigators documented the scene, collected evidence, and coordinated the removal of the vehicles. The investigation remains active, and officials are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision to contact the CHP.
Why This Stretch of Road Is Especially Hazardous
Lakeville Highway is a rural, high-speed corridor connecting Sonoma and Marin counties. It features long straightaways interspersed with rolling grades and limited passing opportunities marked by double-yellow centerlines. At dawn, sun glare and morning haze can reduce visibility. In late fall, dew or residual moisture on the pavement, as well as wildlife activity, can further increase risk. Attempting to pass where prohibited, particularly at highway speeds, dramatically raises the likelihood of a head-on collision—among the most severe crash types due to combined speeds at impact.
The Role of DUI and Legal Implications
Under California Vehicle Code section 23153, it is unlawful to operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to another person. When impairment is suspected in a collision that causes injury or death, law enforcement typically conducts a comprehensive investigation that can include field sobriety testing, toxicology screening, crash reconstruction, and analysis of onboard vehicle data.
