A fatal wrong-way collision on the interchange between Interstate 680 and State Highway 24 early Wednesday morning claimed the life of one driver and left another hospitalized, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:18 a.m. on April 30. Authorities say a dark-colored Toyota RAV4 was traveling the wrong way on the transition ramp when it collided head-on with a white Dodge Challenger.
Emergency responders arrived to find both vehicles severely damaged. Tragically, the driver of the Dodge was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Toyota RAV4 was transported to a local hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries. According to CHP, the driver is expected to be arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter in connection with the crash.
All lanes on the transition ramp were temporarily closed as investigators worked to reconstruct the scene and gather evidence. Authorities have not confirmed how long the wrong-way driver had been traveling before the collision occurred.
Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the high impact forces involved. Alcohol impairment is a leading factor in many of these tragic incidents.
