Deadly Highway 165 Crash Reported

CHP reported a fatal head-on collision in Merced County Wednesday afternoon, January 11th.

It was around 3:30 p.m. when the crash occurred on Highway 165.

A 17-year-old girl was driving north in a Honda Accord when she crossed over into opposing traffic.

As a result, her vehicle collided head-on with a Dodge Caliber, driven by a 44-year-old woman.

The impact caused one of the vehicles to overturn after going off the roadway onto the shoulder.

One passenger in the Honda along with the teenage driver suffered major injuries and were hospitalized.

There was also another passenger of the Honda who suffered minor injuries; however, they declined transport to a hospital.

Unfortunately, the woman driving the Dodge, who was from Los Banos, died after being airlifted to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto.

Her name is being withheld at this time.

The crash remains under investigation.

While head-on collisions account for just 2% of all motor-vehicle accidents, they make up 10% of all fatal accidents.

These types of crashes are most common on two-lane highways and more than half result in a fatality.
