A fatal hit-and-run collision claimed the life of a male pedestrian early Saturday morning, May 3, in Bakersfield. The incident occurred around 6:23 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Westside Parkway near Mohawk Street, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a pedestrian down on the roadway. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the man had sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.
Investigators quickly launched a search for the vehicle and driver responsible for the deadly crash. According to police, the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle driven by 51-year-old Tomice Fryman, who fled the scene immediately following the collision.
After several hours of investigation and search efforts, officers located Fryman later that same day at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the 7300 block of Stockdale Highway. She was arrested and taken into custody on multiple charges, including felony hit-and-run causing death and driving with a suspended license.
The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation. Authorities have not released additional information regarding the victim’s movements prior to the crash or whether any surveillance footage or eyewitness accounts have contributed to the case. Investigators continue to examine the scene and gather evidence in an effort to reconstruct what happened and determine whether any additional factors, such as impairment or distraction, played a role.
The stretch of Westside Parkway where the incident occurred was temporarily closed as investigators documented the scene and crews worked to clear the roadway. The Bakersfield Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any information to contact them immediately.
