Fatal Scooter Crash Reported on Pacific Coast Highway

Avian Law Group expresses its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Glen Gosnell, who tragically lost his life in a scooter accident on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Long Beach on June 13th. The accident happened when an eastbound driver struck him while he was crossing the road outside a crosswalk.

This accident serves as a sober reminder of how vulnerable riders of scooters or mopeds can be, especially when they are in or around traffic. Under California law, scooter riders are required to follow the same rules of the road as other vehicles. They are entitled to use bike lanes, but not walkways or sidewalks except to enter and exit adjacent private property. However, this does not mean that they are immune to accidents and that they can ignore basic safety precautions such as wearing helmets, reflective clothing, and using lights or reflectors at night.

While it is still unclear what caused the accident, the driver who hit Mr. Gosnell may be held liable for negligence or recklessness if they failed to exercise reasonable care or violated any traffic laws. If the driver is found to have been distracted, drunk, speeding, or engaged in any other form of reckless driving, they could face criminal charges and civil lawsuits filed by the victim’s heirs or estate.

Even if the driver is not at fault, the victim’s family may still have recourse to insurance benefits, such as PIP or UM coverage, that can help cover medical expenses, lost wages, and funeral costs. However, navigating the complex and often contentious process of insurance claims can be overwhelming and stressful, especially when dealing with grief and loss.

That is why it is crucial to seek professional legal advice and representation from experienced personal injury lawyers, such as Avian Law Group.
