Cross traffic often travels at higher speeds, and limited sight lines, agricultural equipment, roadside vegetation, and sun glare can all affect a driver’s ability to judge safe gaps. Even at posted stop signs, drivers must take extra care to scan left, right, and ahead, and to account for the speed of oncoming traffic that may appear farther away than it actually is.Nationwide, about one-quarter of fatal traffic crashes occur at or near intersections, with stop-controlled intersections representing a significant share. Common contributors to severe intersection crashes include:- Failure to yield at stop signs or when making turns- Misjudging the speed or distance of cross traffic- Distraction (mobile devices, in-vehicle systems)- Sun glare and visibility issues, particularly during morning hours- Excessive speed on approach by any involved vehicle- Mechanical issues such as faulty brakes or worn tires- Impairment by alcohol or drugsWhile the specific causes of this crash are still being reviewed, investigators typically examine these and other factors through scene measurements, vehicle inspections, witness statements, and available camera or electronic data. How Investigators Reconstruct CrashesIn serious and fatal collisions, investigators often draw on multiple sources of evidence:- Event data recorders (EDRs), commonly called “black boxes,” that can log speed, brake application, throttle position, and seatbelt use in the seconds before impact- Physical evidence such as skid marks, yaw marks, debris fields, and paint transfers- Vehicle damage patterns that help determine angle and force of impact- Scene conditions including signage, road surface, lighting, and visibility- Toxicology screenings as appropriate- Statements from drivers, passengers, and independent witnesses- Any available dashcam or traffic camera footageThis process can take weeks or months.
